The Half of It

“What if halfway is exactly where you need to be?”
— Cheri Ruskus

Last night, looking up at the half moon, the happenings of this past week began to settle, bringing me a sense of calm.

Think about it. When we see the moon (which I love in all its phases), we often celebrate the delicate crescent moon at the beginning of its cycle or the brilliance of the full moon. Rarely do we see a celebration of the half moon.

In all my years as an entrepreneur, the beginning of any new endeavor was exciting, and when the goal was reached, the celebrations happened. But what seemed to get lost along the way was often the hardest part. The middle. The halfway point. Where so much of the work happens.

The hardest part. Truly, where many businesses fail and so many other life goals get tossed to the curb.

The halfway point is the place where just about any endeavor can get sidetracked because, let's face it, being in the middle can be tough.

Maybe the middle isn't just something to endure. Maybe it's something to appreciate. Perhaps even a place to celebrate.

How do I know this to be true? I grew up as the middle child. First in a family of four, then a family of ten. And I made it through! But that's another story for another day.

As the frost hit my garden this past week and my beloved zinnias took their annual nosedive, I found myself somewhere in the middle. Between one gardening season ending and another one beginning.

What I'm discovering is a sense of peace in this space between the garden I am saying goodbye to and the one I will welcome next spring. More about that in this week's video as I bring parts of my garden indoors.

We can see this same pattern in so many parts of our lives. The haves and have-nots. What is and what isn't. So close, yet so far.

What I do know to be true after so many years on this planet is that no matter how far away the finish line may seem, the halfway mark should give us hope.

In my first book, The Victory Letter: Inspiration for the Human Race, I wrote this poem in the chapter on Endurance and Staying on Your Path.

The race has not only started but you are well on your way.
It is now the muscles you've built will come into play.

Your endurance is a key factor keeping you strong.
How you prepared for this race will help you run long.

This is the moment you give all you can,
You run your best race now…that's the plan.

A huge shout-out this morning to our brand-new grandnephew, who was born yesterday and is just beginning his race here on the planet. Callan Patrick, we are so happy you are here!

Where are you in your race? And what matters most to you right now?

Here's to finding the energy this week, both mentally and physically, to take you where you want to go. No matter where you are in the race.

Plant often and with Love!
