Dreaming is Planning

Happy Tuesday,
I hope your Labor Day weekend brought you what you needed and that you are ready for the shorter “work” week ahead.
Last week we had to sadly say goodbye to another woman who helped change what was possible for women.
I met Gloria Steinem about 20 years ago at a book signing. She was gracious and lovely, and she made quite an impression on me.
I think about women’s rights when Gloria first came onto the scene in the late ’60s and how much has changed since then. My mom divorced my dad around that same time, when women still faced enormous barriers to establishing credit and financial independence in their own names.
So much has changed.
And yet, there is something about losing several remarkable women icons within just a few weeks that has me thinking about what more I can do to empower women.
Yes, it’s got me dreaming.
Not necessarily about encouraging women to do more, because heaven knows we do so much already, but about encouraging us to take better care of ourselves so we have the strength, energy, and courage to enjoy being more of who we already are.
Perhaps dreaming really is a form of planning.
I also love meeting women who are already putting their dreams into action.
For my Gardens and the Women Who Grow Them series, I recently had the opportunity to tour the amazing garden of Cortney Kern, whose business, Mother Gardener, helps others create gardens of their own.
Cortney’s garden was a marvel of productivity and possibility, much of it dreamed up and then brought to life by her own two hands.
Of all the wonderful things Cortney shared, these were the words that stayed with me:
“Plant what brings you joy.”
What a beautiful idea for our gardens and perhaps even more so for our lives.
As the gardening season begins to wind down here in Colorado, it’s not too late to plant a few perennials to enjoy now and welcome back next spring. Yes, I am starting to dream about next spring a little.
I even found in my journeys over the weekend a beautiful orange Inca marigold plant. While it's replacing a tomato plant that has finished producing in the garden it's the perfect burst of color for a front porch, balcony, fire escape—or anywhere you could use a little more plant joy before the frost comes.
Whenever that might be. 😉
For now, I’m going to keep dreaming, keep planting, and keep asking myself what I want to help grow next.
